       1963 NHL Draft  [the First]

June 5, 1963
The first NHL Amateur Draft came into being as a way to level the NHL playing field. Prior to 1963, all NHL players arrived in the NHL via sponsorship of their junior teams. The draft was the brainchild of NHL president Clarence Campbell. Amateur drafts already existed in the National Football League and the National Basketball Association.
