Gino Guyer is the
only player
to ever make "First Team All-State" as a sophomore.
John Mayasich had the statistics for it, but was classified
simply as "All-State".
The grouping "First Team All-State" did not come into
effect until 1980. |

The Son Also Rises
Mpls Star-Tribune,
Jan 5, 2001
Hockey is
simply in Gino's blood -- something that can be
confirmed by DNA testing. He is coached by his father.
He grew up a prototypical rink rat, "learning to skate
one step after learning to walk". With his
father as coach, he absorbed so much information through
repetition that the sport became a sixth sense.
Gino's
grandfather played for the Taconite Hornets, and often
brought his sons to the little rink in the center of town.
Gino's father recalls, "From the time we could walk, we were
up there".
Gino
recalls backyard battles with his brother, Andrew, and
cousin, Jamie. They would be out there as late as
midnight. Sometimes the neighbors would call and
complain because they were trying to get some sleep. |
Greenway Has a Ball as Cinderella
Mpls Star-Tribune, March 9, 2001
It was a tribute to
those glorious days of one-class Minnesota state hockey
tournaments. On the one side is Greenway, a northern
school with an enrollment of 391. On the other side
was Eden Prairie, enrollment 2,256.
Eden Prairie was
leading 4-3 in the closing moments of the third period.
Greenway tied the game with 12 seconds left.
With 39 seconds into
overtime, Gino Guyer scored his second goal of the game for a 5-4
Greenway win. |
Glad He Stayed
Home
Duluth News-Tribune, March 15, 2001
Guyer remained at Greenway for his junior hockey season,
turning down (for the second consecutive year) a spot on a
year-round bantam team in Ann Arbor, Michigan.
He was
Minnesota's leading scorer this season and led the Raiders
to a third-place finish in the Class AA boys hockey
tournament.
For that,
he was named the Associated Press' Minnesota player of the
year. Gino was selected ahead of Minnesota's Mr.
Hockey, Marty Sertich of Roseville, by a 6-4 vote. |

Guyer Forgoes
Junior Hockey
Duluth News-Tribune, July 18, 2001
Gino Guyer and Andy Sertich
have become close friends since the Sertich family moved
from Hermantown to Coleraine six years ago. The Guyers
lived next door, and before long Andy and Gino were hanging
out and honing their hockey skills at the local rink just
three blocks away. As juniors they led Greenway to
third place in the state tournament last season. The
two will return to Greenway next season for perhaps their
final year as teammates.
Both considered forgoing their
senior year to play junior hockey. "I have a lot of
friends here who are important to me. You only get one
senior year," said Gino. |
Hit On Guyer
Duluth
News-Tribune, Dec 19, 2001
Greenway's
Gino Guyer crashed to the ice after getting slashed to the
wrists midway through the second period Tuesday night by
Cloquet's Nate Wood. Neither player was very close to
the puck, and the crowd at Greenway's arena didn't
appreciate what they felt was a cheap shot on last year's
Player of the Year.
Sparked by
Wood's penalty, Greenway scored five goals in less than six
minutes to rout Cloquet 8-0. Gino led the way with his
first hat trick of the season. |
Obvious to
(Almost) Everyone
Mpls
Star-Tribune March 11, 2002
Gino Guyer didn't see it coming, even if everyone else did.
He was named the state's 18th Mr. Hockey, given annually to
the top senior in the state. "It was like, 'Wow', when
I heard my name called," Gino said. "I was the lucky
one who got picked." |
Guyer Wins AP
Honor Again
Mpls
Star-Tribune March 14, 2002
Gino had 35 goals
and 50 assists in 26 games: the ingredients for this
season's AP Player of the Year. The first
two-time recipient, Guyer was the clear choice of a panel of
statewide media. |
