How She Got Started |
|
As a seventh grader,
Kayla was playing in
goal for a boys Peewee A hockey team.
She faced
60-some shots in a loss to Osseo, but earned a
win against the same team later in the year. |

Honorable Mention All-State |
| In
section tourney play, the
starting
goalie in
all three games was eighth-grader
Kayla, who had alternated in goal
all season with sophomore Liz
Hemming.
She posted back-to-back
shutouts in the tourney, making 33
stops in the title game.
Coach Jack Gravel said
staying with one goalie for all
three playoff games was "the
toughest choice I had to make all
year. There
was a gut feeling as a coaching
staff that Kayla gave us a better
opportunity to win." |

Section 4AA
playoffs, stopped 80 of 81
shots.
|
| "She's got confidence beyond
her years," teammate Katie Horner said. "She
just plays so level-headed the entire game." |
|
"It is hard to lose, but it feels
great to get second,"
Kayla
said after her North Metro Stars
lost to Stillwater 4-1 in the state
Class AA girls hockey championship
game Saturday. |

She was all conf,
hon mention all state,
voted most valuable and most
dedicated by her teammates.
She was the backbone of
our team this year. We were very
young with only 2 seniors and I
personally felt she had a better
all around year this year then
last year. She was only a 9th
grader this year and her best
years are yet to come. We lacked
scoring punch this year and lost
7 games by 1 goal. She kept us
in every game and almost led us
to an upset of #3 ranked Hopkins
in the section semi final game.
