"I started
skating when I was 2. We used to have a rink in
back of our house. I played hockey with my older
brother, Andy, starting with a Mites team when I was 5."
At ages 12
and 13, she played on a high-school-aged team from St.
Paul that played other high schools that had club teams. |

Kelly
Kegley, a 4-foot-10, 83-pounder whose No.7 jersey
hangs down near her knees when she skates, was the
irresistible "tournament darling" of the first girls
high school hockey tournament.
This feisty eighth-grader is more than a novelty.
She centers the second line for South St. Paul and
leads the Packers with 50 points (28 G, 22 A).
On
the ice, she slips around and between opponents with
a deceptive change of pace, cutting back against the
flow of defenders with instincts reminiscent of a
miniature Neal Broten.

Kelly Kegley Scores
Historic Goal
November 21, 1994
Kelly scored the first goal in the first girls
varsity hockey game. That game kicked off the
inaugural season in which there will be a state
tournament for the 24 teams in Minnesota. It's
the only state in the nation to sanction the sport
for girls. |

Wendell, D/F; Natalie Darwitz, F;

Girls Hockey history. These four

Kelly Kegley, a forward, to the second team.
