                Lauren Smith :
          Lauren's Penalty Shot

Saturday,   February 16, 2008

2008 Section 2AA Semi-final Game against Edina.
Lauren is awarded a penalty shot.

Lauren, alone, at mid ice
Waiting behind the red line.
The referee signals.

Lauren starts forward.
Gathers in the puck
at center ice
. . .

Swings wide to her left.
[
Usually, the skater heads
straight for the goal
.
]

She crosses the blue line
and picks up speed
. . .

Circling toward the slot,
she sweeps
to the front of the net
. . .

Moving across the front
toward the right
[the goalie moving with her
 toward the right
] .
A forehand fake
to backhand stretch and release

sends the puck left
upper left
into the back of the net

The goalie never made a play on the puck.  She seemed focused on the movement of the skater.  Then realizing the puck was in the net, she just froze.

Coach Grossman said of Lauren, "The forehand fake to backhand stretch and release, that’s years of work in her back yard pond, patience, and unbelievable skill."

John of MNPuck on Lauren:     This was a penalty shot.  Two players on the ice.  The skater versus the goalie.  The skater (with puck) confronting the goalie.
Lauren had the puck in the back of the net before the goalie ever realized it.  I have never seen a goalie that  - - -  overwhelmed.  Lauren did have "unbelievable skill".

John of MNPuck was informed of an Old Goalie-ism:
If the skater (skilled player) has fast hands,
the goalie won't see the shot.
