Private
[Catholic] schools co-existed with the public schools
.
They played each other
during the regular season. But only public
schools participated in the state tournament.
In 1965, the first State
Independent H.S. Hockey Tournament took place. The
tournament site alternated between Duluth and the St. Paul
Auditorium.
Crookston Cathedral represented northwestern Minnesota
and Duluth Cathedral represented northeast.
Completing the field were a slew of Twin City Metro
area teams like St. Paul Hill, Benilde, Blake, Breck, St.
Thomas Academy, and St. Paul
Cretin. Every now and then the
tournament would allow a catholic school from Michigan to
compete; usually the team was from Marquette.
During the period of
late-sixties and early-seventies, the private schools
[particularly Duluth Cathedral] held bragging rights over
the public schools.
Cathedral would beat up on all the public school teams, including
Duluth East, Greenway, and
Hibbing.
The Duluth Cathedral Hill-Toppers even ended International Falls'
three-year winning streak at 58
games. Then the Hilltoppers would go off
to a very good
private school tournament, while one of the Range teams they had
beaten would win the "big" tournament.
Those [Duluth] Cathedral
teams were some of the best to ever play the game in this
state. It was a fore gone conclusion
that they would have had a couple of public school titles if
eligible. The private
schools played by a different set of rules back then and had
to adapt to the eligibility rules of the MSHSL to join the
rest of the schools. |
In the 1970's,
Blake and St. Paul Hill were the dominant teams. Hill
was the champion in 1970 and '72. They were undefeated
in '71, but lost the championship game to Blake
Blake won
their second title in '73.
